There are lots of exciting opportunities to get involved in Oliver’s 8th Annual Half Iron Event. Over 200 volunteers are needed for the Oliver Half Iron Triathlon. Volunteers are the lifeblood of a successful event. We will need a range of volunteers in the days leading up to the event, the day of the race and the day after (there’s always cleanup to leave the town and course as you found it). The day will be a long one and your support is essential to the success of the race.

Anyone who volunteers for a shift will receive a complimentary Oliver Half Iron Volunteer shirt and an invitation to share lunch with the athletes after the race.

There are lots of exciting opportunities to get involved in our 8th anniversary. Some of the volunteer positions available include:

• Athlete Registration

• Athlete Meeting Set Up

• Aid Stations

• Bike Check In

• Race day lunch & Awards

• Event Setup & tear down

• Parking

• Body marking

• Swim course

• Transition

• Security

• Kayakers/Canoeists

• On Course Athlete Traffic Control

If you are interested in helping with the event please call (250) 764-3204 or contact us via email at: sarah@outbackevents.ca and let us know what you are interested in. As long as volunteer positions need to be filled, we’ll be signing people up. If you’re not planning to race and would like to help, that would be really appreciated.

If your club, team, school or non-profit group would like to earn some money by helping out at the race, please call Joe or Sarah @ (250) 764-3204.

Without volunteers there will be no race, they are one of the major contributing factors to the success of our event. Please don’t hesitate to become part of this exceptional experience.

Our 2007 Honored Volunteers Were:

1. South Okanagan General Hospital Medical Crew - Dr. Alan Rudiman  and his entire crew have worked tirelessly to set up the medical tent and to ensure that all of our athletes are safe and well taken care of on the day.
2. Oliver Rotary - The wonderful group at the Oliver Rotary have worked with us for all 4 years now, ensuring that everyone is parked in the morning, and fed at the lunch/awards in the afternoon.
3. Ed and Lorraine Dukes -  Ed and Lorraine have been huge supporters of our event for all the years that we have been in Oliver. They are always at registration to help everyone pickup their package, so smile and say thank you the next time you see them there and remember not to grumble when they ask you for your picture ID.
4. O.E.S Fine Art - This wonderful groups consists of the students from the local elementary school that have come out every year to successfully work our Run Aid station at the entrance to the Hike and Bike Path. Many of these students have grown up with the race and we can't thank them enough for their support.
5. Colleen Polychroniou - From registration to directing athletes on the bike course each year at key intersections, Colleen has really helped our athletes have a successful day.
6. Town of Oliver - What can we say, as our host community the Town and its residents welcomed a major event to their community and have provided us with great support each year since the first Sprint triathlon hosted in 2003.
7. Lyla Cambridge - Lyla is our food captain and works with the Rotary to make sure that the post race meal is ready each year.  She has been with us since the first year and helps at each Outback Events race and always has a smile.

Thank you so much to these wonderful volunteers and to all that helped us in 2007 to make the best race experience possible for all of our athletes.

This year we honored a few of our many volunteers that work so hard to help us make this event a success. We know that we couldn't run our events without their hard work so we wanted to give them a token of our appreciation in the form of an engraved plaque. We had the privilege of having Mayor Ron Hovanes welcome the everyone to Oliver and the athletes meeting and also helped Joe in handing out the awards to each of our volunteers.

Our 2006 Honored Volunteers Were:

1. Lee Mounsey - Oliver Youth Soccer - Lee has worked tirelessly with us to make sure that we have enough people to run their aid stations with a seamless operation.
2. Mary Unger - Mary lives right on 81st and has been one of our biggest supporters since the beginning.
3. Allan Reich -  Allan is everywhere from registration on Saturday to the loudest aid station with AC/DC cranked to keep the athletes motivated.
4. Basil Baker - Basil is our hero that stands at Road 6 every year to slow down and direct athletes to make the sharp turn safely.
5. Jane Martin - Jane always has a smile whether it is directing athletes out of the swim up the stairs, to making sure everyone is well fed when serving lunch.
6. Judy Harvey - Judy probably has the biggest and warmest smile of anyone we have ever met. She is always helping us to organize groups to prepare the race for the best experience the athletes can have. Look for her at package stuffing, registration, athletes meeting and she will be there with a smile.
